The Inspiration Behind GoGetFunding
One of the main things that I want to do in this blog is share the inspiration behind some of my key projects and businesses.
And there’s no better place to start than GoGetFunding, the most successful website that I’ve launched to date. GoGetFunding is a crowdfunding website that helps people raise money online with personal fundraising pages. It has helped people from all over the world raise millions online for various causes, projects and events.
Here’s how it all came about….
The rise of Kickstarter was a key element in giving life to GoGetFunding. Kickstarter was revolutionizing the way people raised money online and even how they thought about raising money online. It was (and still is) awesome. However, I didn’t like how it was restricted to creative projects. Furthermore, the all-or-nothing funding model wasn’t for everyone.
I checked out Kickstarter alternatives and they seemed to lack buzz, features or simply cost too much. I really felt there was room in the market for the new crowdfunding website I was dreaming up. It was time to build GoGetFunding.
Takeaway: if you feel that a great business out there is missing something, don’t be afraid to step in and fill that gap.
Building a crowdfunding website is a complex task. There are so many elements that need to seamlessly work together, especially with an eCommerce website that’s handling a lot of money.
To hire a team to build this website could easily set one back around $50,000. An amount that I couldn’t afford at that time.
Luckily, I found a team that had already built a crowdfunding script. It was far from perfect, but it gave me a base. I purchased and began having it customized as per my needs. As is often the case with web development projects, it took a lot longer than I hoped.
In total, to get a version good enough to launch it took approximately 11 months. GoGetFunding was finally launched in December of 2011.
Since launch, there hasn’t been a month that’s gone by where we haven’t worked on tweaks and improvements. From offering fundraisers a new range of campaign management tools to battling spammers and more. GoGetFunding has evolved a great deal and will continue to so we can offer a great crowdfunding experience.
Takeaway: You don’t need a massive budget to create a great business. Work with what you’ve got and continually improve once you’re able.
There’s so much that needs to be covered here that I will probably just write a post on this element alone. In summary, marketing GoGetFunding involved the following:
- Creating an Awesome Customer Experience
- Search Engine Optimization
- Google AdWords
- Outreach to Relevant Bloggers
- GoGetFunding Promotions (zero fees)
Takeaway: there’s a reason why creating an awesome customer experience is at the top. Without that, you can’t build a business that will last.
To help take GoGetFunding to the next level it’s going to take even more effort on the elements mentioned above and more. That ‘more’ includes:
- Building innovative crowdfunding features (we’re releasing a ‘fundraising contest’ feature in a few weeks)
- Really connecting with the industry through conferences and events (I’m booked to speak at a great one next week)
- Brutally showcasing our strengths (our new video explainer will directly compare our fees vs competitors)
Has this inspired you to take action on your great idea? There’s no time like the present.
